Teaching
In 1997 Stuart was unit chair, or supervised project students in the following units:

  • SEB121 on- and off-campus - approx 150 students, all lectures and tutorials;
  • SEB421 on- and off-campus - approx 35 students, all lectures, tutorials and assessment;
  • SEJ341/342 - supervision and assessment of three BTech student projects;
  • SEJ343/443 - supervision and assessment of five BEng student projects;
  • SEJ401 - unit chair;
  • SEJ601 - unit chair; and
  • SEN713 - supervision and assessment of one MEng student project.

Six of the nine student projects were industry-based, where the students will gain valuable real-world experience exposure to engineering practice.

In 1997 Stuart undertook a significant revision of the unit course material for SEB121, including the selection of a new text book.

Again, all class lecture and tutorial notes (including solutions to review questions and past papers) were made available to students electronically via the Internet. Extensive use was also be made of the Web for the provision of supplementary information to on- and off-campus students.

Doctoral program. Completing two study units from the Deakin Master of Distance Education, as well as an extensive literature review.

At the Sixth Annual Australasian Conference of Engineering Management Educators in Adelaide, Stuart presented the paper, A World Wide Web-based Active Tutorial in Accounting Principles for Engineering and Technology Students.

At the 1st Asia-Pacific Forum on Engineering and Technology Education in Melbourne, Stuart presented the paper, Current Issues and Limitations in using the Internet for Teaching and Learning in Engineering and Technology.

At the 9th Annual Convention and Conference of the Australasian Association for Engineering Education in Ballarat, Stuart presented the paper, Engineering Education for Primary School Students.

Development/Consulting
In 1997 Stuart attended the following staff development seminars:

  • 'Academic Scholarship', presented by Dr Charles Glassick of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching;
  • the DCAD seminar of preparing a CUTSD grant application;
  • the 'Statistics in a Day' seminar; and
  • the DCAD forum on assessment and learning; and
  • the Collaborative research with industry seminar.

As part of his Doctoral studies, Stuart completed two units from the Deakin Master of Distance Education program:

  • ECX701 - Theory and Practice of Open and Distance Education (grade - D); and
  • ECX704 - Teaching and Learning of Open and Distance Education (grade - HD).
