1996

Teaching
In 1996 Stuart undertook the following teaching:

  • SEB121 on-campus Geelong - 150 students, all lectures and tutorials;
  • SEB221 on-campus Geelong - 90 students, all lectures and tutorials;
  • SEB311 on-campus Geelong - 40 students, all lectures and tutorials;
  • SEJ341/342 - supervision and assessment of three BTech student projects;
  • SEJ343/443 - supervision and assessment of one BEng student project; and
  • SEN713 - supervision and assessment of one MEng student projects.

In 1996 Stuart undertook the following unit development tasks:

  • unit course material for SEB421; and
  • unit course material for SEB422.

For SEJ443 Stuart supervised an industry-based student project undertaken in conjunction with Bekaert-BHP with a budget of approx. $17,000.

All class lecture and tutorial notes (including solutions to review questions and past papers) were made available to students electronically via the Internet. Extensive use was also made of the Web for the provision of supplementary information to on- and off-campus students.

Research
Stuart commenced his
Doctoral program in 1996.

Along with Baliga, Stuart was awarded a Deakin Active Learning and Teaching Participation Program Fellowship to allow them to mentor other university staff in the use of the WWW in teaching and learning. You can check out the details at their ALTPP Home Page. Stuart participated in the ALTPP Showcase, where fellows presented their work to staff from Deakin and other Victorian universities. Stuart and Baliga were also invited to present their work to staff at Swinburne University staff.

For the 8th annual convention and conference of the Australasian Association for Engineering Education (AaeE), Stuart co-authored a paper entitled Use of the Internet for flexible delivery and enhancement of teaching and learning, and authored and presented a paper entitled The development of atomic weapons - a case study in ethical issues for engineering students.

Development
In 1996 Stuart attended the following staff development courses:

  • Research grant application workshop;
  • Effective lecturing;
  • Compiling a teaching portfolio; and
  • Internet for research.

Service
In 1996 Stuart contributed the following School service:

  • member of the Head of School Advisory Committee;
  • member of School Internet Advisory Committee;
  • chair of School Computing Advisory Committee;
  • School Library Liaison Officer (representing the School in library client focus group sessions);
  • member of Workshop on Australian Manufacturing (WAM 96) organising committee; and
  • Assistant Course Coordinator for Mechatronics discipline.

In 1996 Stuart participated in the following professional activities:

  • corporate member of the Institution of Engineers, Australia (IEAust);
  • member of IEAust Geelong group committee;
  • member of the organising committee for the engineering awareness competition, a state-wide exercise reaching all Victorian primary and secondary schools with the aim of promoting an understanding of engineering as a profession and a career option;
  • member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers, Australia (APESMA); and
  • member of the Society for Engineering Management, Australia (SEMA).

Additionaly in 1996, Stuart hosted a visit to the School by the IEAust Victoria Division Chairman, Mr. Michael Byrne, to review the School's computer-based teaching applications. Stuart also made a presentation on this topic on behalf of the Faculty to a study group visiting Deakin from Norway.
