2006

Institute of Teaching and Learning
On 16 August 2006, Stuart joined the Deakin University Institute of Teaching and Learning.

For 2006, Stuart (as project leader) was awarded a $16,300 Strategic Teaching and Learning Grant Scheme (STALGS) for the project entitled Developing a framework for discipline-contextualised graduate attributes in the professional field of engineering: enhancing student achievement of Deakin's graduate attributes.  Stuart made a presentation of the project work at the 2006 Deakin Teaching and Learning Conference.

In semester 2 2006, Stuart continued to deliver the following units for the School of Engineering and Technology:

Stuart was a manuscript reviewer for the 17th Annual Conference of the Australasian Association for Engineering Education.

Stuart was a manuscript reviewer for the journal Computers and Education.

Stuart was a member of the Australasian Society for Computers in Learning in Tertiary Education (ascilite).

Stuart was co-supervisor for a PhD student at the University of Plymouth (UK) investigating the application of simulated laboratory experiments in engineering education.


School of Engineering and Information Technology
Prior to 16 August, Stuart was a member of the School of Engineering and Information Technology, and doing the following:

Teaching
Stuart was unit chair for the following units:

For 2006, Stuart (as project leader) was awarded a $16,300 Strategic Teaching and Learning Grant (STALGS) for the project entitled Developing a framework for discipline-contextualised graduate attributes in the professional field of engineering: enhancing student achievement of Deakin's graduate attributes.  As part of the grant, Stuart is also a Teaching Fellow of the Institute of Teaching and Learning for 2006.

Research
Stuart (as a team member with Xungai Wang and Lijing Wang) was awarded $521,000 by Australian Wool Innovation for the research project Pilling and Softness of wool fabrics.

Stuart was supervising two doctoral students conducting research in the image analysis of textile properties, and, forecasting the reliability of centrifugal pumps.

Development
Stuart  was awarded an International Studies Program grant to visit the University of Plymouth in 2006 to conduct collaborative research on the prediction of composite material performance properties from computer image analysis, and, to prepare for publication a series of research papers on off-campus engineering education.

Stuart was invited to give a presentation to the staff of the University of Plymouth Faculty of Technology on the topic of Online teaching and learning in engineering at Deakin.

Stuart was invited to give a presentation to the staff group commencing the unit EEE713 in the Graduate Certificate of Higher Education program on the topic of EEE713 - A survival guide.

Service
Stuart contributes the following service to the School:

  • member of Engineering Academic Advisory Board;
  • member of the School Academic Progress Committee;
  • Faculty marketing representative for Engineering;
  • member of School Teaching and Learning Committee;
  • School representative on Faculty/Deakin International liaison committee;
  • Program Leader for Engineering; and
  • School liaison for the Australasian Association for Engineering Education (AaeE).
