Teaching
Stuart is unit chair for the following units:

  • SEB121 Fundamentals of Technology Management; and
  • SEB421/721 Strategic Issues in Engineering.

Additionally, Stuart teaches in the following units:

  • SEB221 Managing Industrial Organisations.

Finally, Stuart supervises students in the following units:

  • SEJ343/342 - supervision of 2 Bachelor of Technology student projects; and
  • SEJ343/443 - supervision of 6 Bachelor of Engineering student projects.

Stuart has been awarded a Deakin Online Teaching and Learning Fellowship for 2003 - this provides funding for 6 months of advanced professional development followed by 6 months to mentor other Faculty staff in application of on-line technology in teaching and learning.

Stuart has been awarded a Faculty of Science and Technology Teaching Excellence Award for 2003.

Stuart was invited to participate in a delegation from Deakin making a presentation on aspects of the WebCT Vista on-line course management system to staff at Monash University in December 2003.

Research
Stuart has been awarded a Seeding Grant from the School for the research project - Validation of method for automated classification of degree of pilling of fabric.

Stuart (along with Xungai Wang) was awarded a $15,000 Central Research Grant for the research project - Development of image processing techniques for objective fabric evaluation.

SEJ443 project student Iman Joud was awarded a $5000 Honours Scholarship from Australian Wool Innovation for her project 'Optimisation of an automated method for assessment of fabric pilling intensity based on computer image analysis'.

Development/Consulting
Stuart has been invited to contribute a case study on assessment in engineering for the Australian Universities Teaching Committee funded Assessing Learning in Australian Universities project.

Stuart has been invited by the Swedish Council for the Renewal of Higher Education to act as a international engineering discipline reviewer for grant applications in the 2003 round. This body is analogous to the Australian University Teaching Committee.

Stuart is a member of the technical committee for the 14th Annual Conference for Australasian Association for Engineering Education, and chaired a conference session.
