Teaching
Stuart is unit chair, or supervising project students in the following units:

Stuart's SEB421 student Richard Facer was awarded second prize in the 2000 Institution of Engineers, Australia (IEAust) National Public Policy Essay Competition for his SEB421 report entitled 'End product waste management'.

Stuart's SEJ443 project student Philip Vergers was awarded the 2000 Vice-Chancellor's Prize, for the best piece of undergraduate work across the university, for his final-year project thesis entitled 'Relay switching from PC via RS232 interface - PC controlled powerboard'.

Research
Stuart's thesis for his
Doctoral program is currently under examination.

At the 4th Annual UNESCO International Centre for Engineering Education Conference in Bangkok, Stuart presented the paper, Usage of a computer conferencing system by on- and off-campus engineering students.

In the Journal of Research on Computing in Education, Stuart published the paper, On- and off-campus engineering student usage of a computer conferencing system, v33, n3, 280-298.

In the European Journal of Engineering Education, Stuart published the paper, Engineering flexible teaching and learning in engineering education, v26, n1, pp 1-13.

In the Journal of Computing in Higher Education, Stuart (with William Tulloch) published the paper, The Evolution of On-line Teaching and Learning in Engineering at Deakin University, v13, n1, 91-109.

In the Australasian Journal of Engineering Education, Stuart published the paper, Whither management studies in Australian engineering undergraduate courses?, v9, n2, (in print).

In the book Engineering the Future: Preparing Professional Engineers for the 21st Century (Lloyd, B., Ferguson, C., Palmer, S. and Rice, M., Melbourne: APESMA in association with Histec Publications, 2001), Stuart contributed a chapter on engineering management education in Australia.

In the International Journal of Engineering Education, Stuart published the paper, An evaluation of undergraduate engineering management studies, v17, n6, (in print).

At the 12th Annual Convention and Conference of the Australasian Association for Engineering Education in Brisbane, Stuart was scheduled to present the paper, Graduate evaluation of engineering management studies at Deakin University

Stuart was awarded a $10,000 grant by the James N Kirby Foundation to develop multimedia resources to be used in engineering and technology education in primary schools. This project was undertaken in conjunction with the Victoria Division of the Institution of Engineers, Australia. You can see the finished project at: www.enged.com.

Stuart has been awarded a Seeding Grant from the School for the research project - Longitudinal study of on- and off-campus student academic performance in the School of Engineering and Technology at Deakin University.

Stuart has been awarded a Teaching Grant from the School to design, re-develop, deliver and evaluate a unit for on-line delivery. The grant panel requested the project budget be increased to include additional School staff.

Development/Consulting
Stuart has been invited by the
Swedish Council for the Renewal of Higher Education to act as a international engineering discipline reviewer for grant applications in the 2001 round. This body is analogous to the Australian University Teaching Committee.

Stuart has been invited to participate in the CSIRO Australian Animal Health Laboratory Security Assessment Group as an expert on computer process control.

Stuart was invited to make a presentation on 'large group lecturing' as part of induction training for new academic staff by the Deakin Centre for Academic Development.

Stuart was interviewed for the cover story of the April 2001 edition of Engineers Australia on 'Learning via the Internet'.

Service
Stuart contributes the following service to the School:

  • member of the School EEO Committee;
  • member of the School Marketing Committee;
  • member of the University FirstClass Operations Group;
  • member of the School Honours working party,
  • chair of the School working party on On-line Resources; and
  • School liaison for the Australasian Association for Engineering Education (AaeE).
