1999

Teaching
Stuart was unit chair, or supervised project students in the following units:

  • SEB121 Fundamentals of Technology Management;
  • SEB421 Strategic Issues in Engineering;
  • SEJ341/342 - supervision of four Bachelor of Technology student projects;
  • SEN713 - supervision of two Master of Technology student projects;
  • SEM227;
  • SEJ401;
  • SEJ601; and
  • DTech - co-supervision of one Doctor of Technology candidate.

Stuart revised the unit course material for SEB421.

All class lecture and tutorial notes (including solutions to review questions and past papers) were made available to students electronically via the Internet. Extensive use was also be made of the Web for the provision of supplementary information to on- and off-campus students.

In May, Stuart was awarded a Faculty of Science and Technology Teaching Excellence Award for a nomination based on the unit SEB421 - Strategic Issues in Engineering.

In September, Stuart was awarded the Australasian Association for Engineering Education 1999 McGraw-Hill New Engineering Educator Award.

Research
Stuart worked on his
Doctoral program.

At the 2nd UICEE Education Conference in Auckland, Stuart presented the paper, The inflexibilities of flexible teaching and learning in engineering and technology.  This paper was lead paper for the conference session on 'Innovation in engineering and technology education'.

At the 2nd Asia-Pacific Forum on Engineering and Technology Education in Sydney, Stuart presented the paper, A comparison of on- and off-campus student computer usages in engineering and technology education.

At the 11th Australasian Conference on Engineering Education in Adelaide, Stuart presented the paper, The evolution of on-line teaching and learning in engineering at Deakin University.  (Also at the 1999 ODLAA Forum).

In the International Journal of Continuing Engineering Education and Lifelong Learning, Stuart published the paper, Engineering management studies as part of continuing engineering education, 1999, v9, n2.

Stuart was awarded a $10,000 grant from the James N Kirby Foundation to develop multimedia resources to be used in engineering and technology education is primary schools.

Stuart is part of the School team contributing to the CASTmm Cooperative Research Centre. Stuart is involved in the CRC education program, incorporating the investigation and development of a national, integrated, education and training program for the Australian casting industry, as well as education research related to the program.

Development/Consulting
Stuart was invited by the Swedish Council for the Renewal of Undergraduate Education to act as a reviewer for grant applications in the 1999 round.

Service
Stuart contributed the following service to the School:

  • member of the School Board;
  • member of the Faculty Board;
  • member of the Faculty Ethics Sub-committee;
  • (and the following until August 1999)
  • member of the University Discipline Committee;
  • member of School Computing Advisory Committee;
  • member of Faculty Information Technology Sub-committee;
  • member of the School Courses Committee;
  • School Library Liaison Officer; and
  • Assistant Course Co-ordinator for Mechatronics discipline.

Professional / Other
Stuart participated in the following professional activities:

Stuart was invited to chair a conference session at the 2nd Asia-Pacific Forum on Engineering and Technology Education.
